Jordi Vilasuso recalls why his Y&R character Rey Rosales never wanted to lose Sharon to Adam
Ever since Jordi Vilasuso announced his departure from The Young and the Restless, fans were curious to find out how their favorite character would leave. The fans finally got their answer this week as Ashland reveals to his wife that they were involved in a 3-car accident, which ended up killing Rey on the spot. The plot twist has Jordi flabbergasted as much as his fans are right now since he was in the middle of some really interesting storylines lately. And although he leaves the show in a heartbreaking way, there are some bittersweet memories he is leaving with, which he recalled in one of his recent interviews.
Jordi Vilasuso credits Rey’s past for his wisdom
Jordi joined Y&R in August 2018, playing detective Rey Rosales who comes to Genoa City to solve a special case. He went on to become a staple member of the Y&R family as he got paired with one of the show’s prominent female characters, Sharon Newman.
Before getting married, Rey and Sharon went through many trials and tribulations like when Rey’s estranged wife came to GC to reconcile with him and when Sharon was diagnosed with cancer. Meanwhile, after getting married, Adam went on to become a major source of contention for this couple.
Whether it’s Adam or Nick creating the problems, he always took the rough with the smooth. It’s something Jordi found very hard to get about his character, he admitted in a recent interview with Soaps.com.
“Even as an actor playing this role, I had to kind of swallow my pride a little bit and be like, ‘Why is he being so understanding? I really had to do some soul-searching,” he said.
No one would indeed have been able to put up with Adam’s presence any more than Rey did. As someone who’s played the role for years and known Rey from up close, Jordi admitted that Rey’s humble attitude had a lot to do with his past.
“Growing up, he had to deal with a lot of stuff and kind of put his own stuff aside and take care of other people. I think that speaks to him in terms of how understanding he is with Sharon — the patience that he has with her and the fact that he’s able to a certain point to tolerate the situation with Adam,” the daytime vet said.

Rey just did not want to lose Sharon to Adam Newman
Rey did not have to play any game to prove his love to Sharon. He was forthright, dependable, honest, and open. He was way better than Adam had ever been and Sharon should have realized that sooner or later.
He would have never let Sharon go through the pain of choosing between two men if it wasn’t for Adam. He would have left without any complaint just like the time when he backed out of his and Mia’s marriage. However, in this battle of hearts, he knew that he had to win and the battle became “almost very ego-driven” – Jordi admitted.
“‘I’m not going to let him have her, she loves me.’ There’s this drive to get him out of the way completely,” he said. “Rey’s gotten to know a lot of these women in various relationships, whether it’s his mother or seeing it in cases he’s worked and seeing how manipulators and con men use these women to get what they want. For Rey, it’s winning this battle,” he added.
Sharon ultimately learned why Rey was the best choice for her. And she decided to support his idea of giving their marriage a second chance. There was so much more the pair could have explored about their relationship but sadly, Rey is dead and Sharon’s in great shock from the news.
