Josh Griffith says Claire is here to stay
In an interview with Soap Opera Digest, the mastermind behind the twist, head writer and executive producer Josh Griffith, spilled the beans on how he loves diving into the show’s rich history to come up with storylines that resonate with the audience.
“I’m always diving into the history to find something that’ll spark a story for now because I always think that’s much more satisfying for the audience, especially our long-term audience,” Griffith shared. He believes that connecting to the past brings a sense of nostalgia, and he wants the viewers to go like, “Oh wow. I remember that and I thought that was over and done with,’ as opposed to always bringing in something new.”
The journey to Claire’s character took an unexpected turn when Griffith decided to revisit the past of the iconic characters Victor and Nikki. In the search for a character with a vendetta against them, he stumbled upon Eve Howard. The catch? She was supposed to be dead. Intrigued by the mystery of a seemingly deceased baby, Griffith played with the idea of a sister, a woman, who spent 26 years molding a psychopath under the belief that she was abandoned by the Newmans.
To breathe life into Claire, the production team turned to the talented Hayley Erin, known for her stellar performance as Kiki on GENERAL HOSPITAL. Despite her previous stint as Abby on Y&R, Erin was roped in for the role. While everything went well, he still felt like something was missing. With one crucial note, Erin adjusted her performance, and it clicked perfectly.
Claire’s character underwent a swift transformation, shifting from a helpful and Innocent to a cold and calculating one. The turning point came when she discovered the truth about her Aunt Jordan stealing her from the hospital.
One of the standout moments, as per Griffith, was when Claire realized her aunt had deceived her. In that instant, viewers witnessed a profound change in the character, marked by hurt and 26 years of betrayal. And when Griffith saw that he was like, “Okay, she is absolutely redeemable.”
So far it looks like the story is far from over, especially now that Cole and Victoria still have to figure out how they’re going to handle her. Plus as you heard, Griffith is nothing but praises for Hayley Erin so, I bet she still has a long way to go until she’s leaving. What do you guys think? Do you want to see Erin as a full time cast?
