What actually caused Billy Miller’s untimely death?
On September 15, 2023, just two days before his 44th birthday, the world lost Billy Miller, a true gem, the kind-hearted alum from The Young and the Restless. Billy’s journey into the soap opera kicked off in 2007 when he scored a role in All My Children as Richie Novack. A year later, he found his way to The Young and the Restless, captivating audiences as Billy Abbott. After that he moved on to General Hospital, where he stayed until 2019. However, life had a different script for Billy Miller.
When his manager, Marnie Sparer, made the heartbreaking announcement, sharing that the actor had been battling manic depression when he died, it left the whole fans, as well as the industry, in void. While we will always remember him through his many years of work on screen as well as off screen, there is one more way that is going to keep his name alive forever.
Beyond the glitz of Hollywood, Billy was a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin. He earned his stripes in the department of Radio-Television-Film (RTF) at the Moody College of Communication. His sister, Megan Hubbell, revealed that the family and friends of Billy Miller are keeping his spirit alive by establishing the William Jon Miller II “Billy Miller” Memorial Scholarship to honor him at his alma mater. This scholarship is a permanent one which aims to support students in the RTF program facing financial challenges. Megan stated, “We want something positive to be held in his name in perpetuity through the University he loved.”

Megan shared that creating something positive in Billy’s name is a fitting tribute, saying, “He would be honored to know that even in death, he can help someone else realize their dreams.” Known for his roles in All My Children, The Young & The Restless, and General Hospital, Billy began his academic journey in UT’s zoology program before joining RTF. He was among the few accepted into the department’s prestigious production-sequence program.
Fondly called BJ by close friends and family, Miller cherished his time as a Texas Longhorn. According to Megan, “The time he spent at UT allowed him the space to explore who he wanted to be and what he wanted to accomplish.” In addition to creating the scholarship, Billy’s family encourages everyone to take a moment to consider their mental health. Megan stressed, “BJ would want anyone struggling with intrusive thoughts to seek professional help. Do not suffer in silence or try to muscle through on your own. Shame has no place in the discussion to seek help.”
