Exclusive: Zach Tinker talks about his Gay character and unexpected storyline

During an interview with Soap Hub, Zach Tinker expressed his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to revisit his role on the show, even if it was only for a short time. Zach Tinker made a return to Y&R earlier this year in a special episode celebrating Tracey Bergman’s 40th anniversary as Lauren Fenmore. Fenmore appeared along with his boyfriend Trey, played by Julian Larach, who was a buyer for the department store.
Tinker expressed his excitement about his character coming out and finding a relationship, highlighting the importance of representation in the media. He also expressed his pleasure in seeing his Y&R family again. He said, “I was thrilled to have that happen. Representation is always nice to have. It’s always nice to see my Y&R family.”
Before Fenmore’s recent appearance, the character was believed to be heterosexual, so his coming out as gay was unexpected. However, his coming out and his parents reactions to it occurred off-camera, which Tinker found curious. He suggested that it felt like a missed opportunity to not delve further into the storyline and explore the dynamics between him and his parents. Despite this, he still appreciated the opportunity to play a gay character on the show and bring more representation to the LGBTQ+ community. He stated that he liked the story but he wished for more exploration of it.
He specifically mentioned the coming out story of Sonny’s husband Will, played by Chandler Massey, on Days, which was introduced over a decade ago and unfolded over time. Tinker shared that he watched the episode where Will talked to Sonny when Chandler won his Daytime Emmy award. He expressed his desire to explore a similar storyline with his character on Y&R too.
