Is Y&R trying to bring Doug Davidson back? Paul Williams attends Rey’s funeral?
It’s an age old question for Y&R fans – Will Doug Davidson ever return to the Young and the Restless. We haven’t seen the Daytime Emmy Award winning actor on the show since November of 2020. But you must have noticed that Paul Williams’ name was mentioned in a recent episode of the CBS soap. It’s just so random and surprising that the show is mentioning Paul Williams considering how they have treated the character and his portrayer. We know this is just a wild conjecture at this point. But we can’t help but wonder if Paul Williams could make his highly awaited return to the Young and the Restless by making an appearance at Rey’s funeral. Also take a look at what the actor recently tweeted about his career status.
Doug Davidson did not want to leave Y&R
Doug Davidson began playing Paul Williams on the Young and the Restless canvas on May 23, 1978. Doug was dropped to recurring status in 2018 but we haven’t seen much of Paul Williams in Genoa City. He is among the longest serving actors on the show yet his status with the show remains up in the air.
Doug has taken to social media several times expressing his dissatisfaction with the treatment he received on the show around the time he was let go from the soap. After his last appearance on screen, he tweeted, ”It’s the state of television. I find it remarkable that after 42.5 years I haven’t heard from the network at all. No thank you for your service, a phone call. Many gifts from the first 25 years…not a peep from this group. I don’t think it’s personal. New era. Still grateful.”
Well it’s clear from his tweets that Doug would be open to returning to the canvas but it’s the powers that be at the show that aren’t making this happen. This week, when a fan tweeted that it was Doug who had retired from the show, the actor was quick to correct them, writing, “I didn’t retire.”

Paul Williams’ name keeps popping up
Fans have also been frustrated with the show for using Paul Williams’ name when they have no intention of inviting Doug back on set. His name keeps popping up but we’re afraid to be hopeful about a return. One fan wrote on Twitter, “Why does Paul’s name keep coming up in dialogue on the show if the door has not been left open for Paul to make a possible future appearance?” We couldn’t agree more.
Another fan pointed out that it makes no sense that Doug would be missing at Rey’s funeral. So the show has already planted the seeds to have the funeral in Miami. The fan wrote, “So insulting by the writers, to DD & the fans. They constantly mention “Paul” to dangle the ever elusive carrot. Either show DD some respect after 4 decades or leave it be.”
We’re not holding out any hope that the show is bringing back Paul but it sure would be nice to have him on screen again. Let us know in the comments what you think about the whole thing.
