Who is Malcolm Winters? What happened to him in Y&R?
Malcolm Winters was one of the characters that the fans quickly fell in love with. He was first introduced in Young and the Restless back in 1994, originally brought to life by Shemar Moore until 2005. Then, in 2009, Darius McCrary stepped in to fill those shoes for a while before Moore swung back into the role in 2014 for a quick appearance. Since then, he has made sure to pop by Genoa City whenever he is needed. Moore even made a return for a heartfelt tribute to Kristoff St. John, who played Neil Winters, in 2019, and then again popped in for the show’s big 50th anniversary celebration in 2023.
When Malcolm first showed up in town, he wanted to reconnect with his brother Neil Winters, who was a bit hesitant at first but eventually warmed up to him. Malcolm was a photographer who immediately fell for Drucilla Barber, Neil’s future wife. After a mix-up involving too much cold medicine, Malcolm and Dru ended up sleeping together. The morning after, Malcolm was really beating himself up for the mix-up. Dru, then had a baby girl, Lily Winters, and thought Neil was the dad, so she let Malcolm off the hook. Later, Malcolm got together with Keesha Monroe, but their happiness was short-lived as she died from AIDS not long after they got hitched.

Malcolm then got involved with Olivia Barber, grew close to her son Nate Hastings Jr, and they got married. But his past with Callie Rogers caused a ton of drama, ending his marriage to Olivia. Even though he and Callie got engaged, she ended up leaving town. Malcolm still played the dad role to Nate, though. But then again, the brothers feel in love with the same lady, attorney Alex Perez. Alex ended up marrying Malcolm, although she still had some feelings for Neil. Things came to a head when Malcolm caught her with Neil, leading him to take a job in Kenya. While there, a bridge collapsed and everyone thought Malcolm was dead.
He showed up alive two years later, not too happy with Neil for not saving him in Kenya, but they eventually patched things up. Malcolm then had a brief romance with Adrienne Markham and stirred things up demanding Dru for a paternity test of Lily. Then it was revealed that Malcolm was her biological dad. He and Dru decided to keep it from Neil, but Neil found out after Malcolm left town again.

In 2009, Malcolm sneaked back into Genoa City on a mission for Tucker McCall, pretending to be a corporate spy. He found out Lily was battling ovarian cancer and tried to be there for her, but clashed with Neil in the process. Luckily, they buried the hatchet again. Malcolm landed a spot as a photographer for Restless Style mag and even hired his nephew, Devon, to assist him. He mentioned he was engaged, and eventually, his fiancé, Sofia Dupre, showed up. But when he found out she was hiding stuff from him, he called off the engagement. Sofia then hooked up with Neil, got pregnant with baby Moses, and it turned out Neil was the dad. Malcolm was heartbroken, divorced Sofia, and hit the road again.
In 2014, Malcolm came back to town again to mend his relationship with Neil and help him deal with losing his sight. Then in 2019, he made one last trip back to say goodbye to Neil at his funeral, joining the rest of the family to say their goodbyes. He thanked Neil for all he’s done for him and given him. After comforting everyone at the house, Malcolm headed back on the road, promising to stay in touch.
Later in March 2023, he surprised everyone with his quick visit to the Bicentennial gala in honor of Neil. During that time, Devon even took the family name and changed his last name to Winters. Malcolm was super proud of him and after an emotional time at home, he was back on the road again.
