The Young and the Restless Stars’ Real-Life Health Scares | Times We Almost Lost Them
Life can be scary sometimes, especially when you get hit with some pretty scary health issues. So today, we will be looking at some of the Young and the Restless cast who have faced some real-life health scares. Without any further ado, let’s jump right in.
Number 1. Eric Braeden
Eric Braeden’s whole world changed when he found out about his cancer. The 82-year-old actor Braeden, known for playing Victor Newman on Y&R since 1980, opened up about his battle with prostate cancer back in April 2023.
He revealed that he experienced prostate problems while recovering from knee surgery. After enduring terrible pain, he sought medical help, and received the diagnosis of cancer. He underwent surgery and a UroLift procedure, but unfortunately, later found high-grade cancer cells, leading to immunotherapy treatments.

So far, his chemos are working pretty good, and working on him, helping him become healthier with time. Despite the challenges, Braeden remains strong and grateful for his work, and the support of Young and the Restless fans, whom he continues to entertain.

Number 2. Kate Linder
Kate Linder has been famously recognized as Esther Valentine from the Young and the Restless since 1982. She has even earned herself a star on the Hollywood walk of fame for excellent portrayal on the soap.
In September 2021, Kate suffered an injury while taking care of her mother. Although it wasn’t a major one, she still was hospitalized for a couple of days. She also underwent physical therapy.
In a statement, Linder said, “I am so grateful to my incredible doctors, nurses, and physical therapists for taking such good care of me. I want to thank my mom, my friends, and my Y&R family for their outpouring of good wishes and support.” It could’ve turned ugly, especially at her age, but thankfully, she recovered very fast, and is all fit and fine now.
Number 3. Max Page
Max Page appeared as Reed Hellstrom on the soap from 2009 to 2016. Unfortunately, his acting journey was cut short because of his health issues. The actor was born with a heart defect and wears a pacemaker, along with an artificial pulmonary heart valve.

Over the years, he has endured several surgeries. In the fall of 2021, he had just started senior year when he had to be hospitalized to replace his pacemaker. His mom has always kept us updated on his surgeries on her Instagram. After experiencing sporadic fevers, he had to undergo another surgery to replace his leads and pacemaker. It was tricky surgery due to scar tissue build up, but thankfully, he is all well now. So far, that was the last surgery he had. Now he is a big boy and even scouting some colleges.
Number4. Courtney Hope
Whether be on screen as Sally Spectra, or off screen as Courtney Hope, she has always been a fighter and a strong woman. She uses her platform to raise awareness about mental health and encourage others to take control of their life. Most of you may not know this but she has also been battling asthma for a longtime as well.

Back in 2020, when she was transitioning to the Young and the Restless, she was having quite a stressful experience because she was just getting off her asthma medication, which she was on for 25 years. On her instagram, she opened up about it, and wrote, “Having withdrawals from my asthma meds that TORTURED my body and nervous system for over the last two year,” and added, “I’ve felt bloated, swollen, moody, miserable, asthmatic, hot, then cold, afraid, and tired AF.”
But she has a positive spin on that too. She felt like she was growing, learning, and cleansing herself, which helped her a lot. Fast forward to present day, Courtney’s relationship with herself is stronger than it’s ever been, and she is living to her fullest.
Number 5. Peter Bergman
Peter Bergman is forever going to be recognized as Jack Abbott, and his talents and portrayal of the character takes all the credit. But back in early 2022, he took several weeks off the show due to his eye problems.
Bergman experienced a sudden medical crisis during a trip to visit his family in California. He noticed an unusual vision problem in his left eye, which worsened quickly, leading to the diagnosis of a detached retina. Urgent surgery was required, and thankfully, he was able to schedule it the very next day with a recommended surgeon in Los Angeles. Thanks to his connections through his wife, Mariellen.
Throughout his recovery, he had to maintain a specific position to heal, which was quite challenging for him. He had to face parallel to the floor for “50 minutes out of every hour for seven days.” It prevented him from doing his favorite activities like reading books and exercising. Nevertheless, he received support from loved ones and colleagues during this difficult time and now he has great vision. Along with him, his fellow co-star had also gone through the same surgery before.
Number 6. Mishael Morgan
Back in March 2021, Mishael dropped a post on her Instagram very casually with an eye patch, which sure had all the fans worried. While everyone was freaking out, she was as chill as one could be. Back in the day, Morgan underwent emergency surgery to fix a detached retina as well, causing her character on The Young and the Restless to be temporarily recast with Karla Mosley. Thankfully everything is fine now. There was a slight issue with her eye pressure after the surgery, but it was resolved, and she’s been given a clean bill of health.
Although she needed regular check ups due to a higher risk of future problems, she feels fortunate not to have any lingering vision issues. Interestingly, Morgan had no idea she had a detached retina as she experienced no symptoms like floaters, flashes, pain, or headaches. She skipped her eye exam the previous year, but luckily it was timely diagnosed during a routine exam this time.
The doctor explained that detached retinas can happen suddenly and lead to blindness, making the emergency surgery necessary. That’s why you always need to have routine check-ups because you never know.

Number 7. Christian Le Blanc
Christian Le Blanc, the fantastic actor who plays Michael Baldwin on Y&R, has had his fair share of success and health scares. Last Christmas of 2022, he spent the day in a hospital. In his post on Instagram, LeBlanc playfully joked about being “run down by a reindeer,” but he assured everyone that there was nothing to worry about, and that he was already back home and doing fine.

He also thanked all the nurses for taking care of him. While he did not reveal anything about the reason behind it at the time, it was later revealed to be an infection. LeBlanc’s hospitalization was caused by an infected finger on his right hand, but there was no apparent cut or injury to explain it. Despite getting it checked and taking antibiotics, the infection worsened, leading to swelling and a red line spreading up his arm. Fearing a potential loss of his finger, he rushed to urgent care, and was advised to go to the emergency room immediately.
He was admitted to Cedars Sinai Medical Center, where his finger was lanced, and his fingernail had to be removed. Despite the injury, he continued to film for The Young and the Restless, adapting to the situation by minimizing the use of his right hand, though it was challenging as he is right-handed. His nail did grow back and now it’s all in the past, and it probably looks normal now.
Number 8. Kimberlin Brown
Kimberlin Brown, who plays the ultimate villain of all the villains, Sheila Carter, is one heck of an actress in The young and the Restless, as well as in The Bold and the Beautiful. But did you know she broke her leg once in the past?
In July 2022, Kimberlin fell off the ladder and broke her heel. She had to go through surgery which was a great success, of course, and was kept on leg rest for quite a while. She couldn’t put weight on it and had to use a cane to go around.

She had a friend in the same situation, and that was Katherine Kelly Lang, who had also broken her leg after trying to get off a horse. It was easier for them to heal with each other’s support, But it had been the worst time because her son was getting married at the time.
Number 9. Tammin Sursok
The Young and the Restless Star, who played ex Colleen Carlton, the daughter of Traci Abbott and Brad Carlton, had a little health scare of her own back in 2021. Sursok shared on her Instagram stories about how she had to be rushed to the ER, where she discovered a large cyst in her right ovary.

Despite the risky situation, she expressed relief that she now has a diagnosis, and can manage and resolve the problem. Many women had suffered from years of abdominal pain and misdiagnoses, some even facing infertility. Feeling the need to address this important issue, Sursok urged for open conversations about women’s health and making it a priority. She thanked her fans and everyone for their support on that scary night. But all’s well that ends well.
