Eric Braeden opens up about real-life cancer and return to triumph on Y&R in latest Interview
We have all seen Victor taking his throne back and reminding everyone who the boss is around town. And recently, Eric Braeden just opened up in an interview about what’s going on for his character in The Young and the Restless amidst his own health battles. So, without any further ado, let’s jump right in.
Eric Braeden explains if Victor treats his children biasedly
In an exclusive interview with Soap Opera Digest, iconic soap opera actor Eric Braeden, known for his portrayal of Victor Newman on The Young and the Restless, gave us a little insight on Victor’s recent power moves, as well as his journey in winning his battle against bladder cancer. The interview started off with how it felt for him to see Victor getting back to his rightful place, and it’s heart-warming.
Eric Braeden couldn’t be happier about Victor Newman’s latest progress in The Young and the Restless. He’s thrilled to see Victor back at the throne of Newman Enterprises, showing Adam the door, giving Victoria a reality check, and placing Nikki in the CEO chair at Newman Media. According to Braeden, it was high time for Victor to reclaim his rightful position after wishy-washy in-between phase. He said, “I hate that in-between bulls–t, where he’s neither retired nor [in charge]. It was high time and I loved it!”

In the interview, Braeden also gave a glimpse into Victor’s complex parental struggles. He’s a father who yearns for family unity but struggles to accept that his kids have their own minds. Braeden highlights how Victor’s challenging upbringing in an orphanage has deeply influenced his desire for a tight-knit clan. He wants to be the one calling the shots, but his kids aren’t always on board with that plan.
He also got into the whole whether Victor treats Adam poorly or not, and he believes it’s simply not true. He believes Victor has been fair to Adam and pointed out that he has consistently expressed loyalty and support for his son, despite Adam’s feelings of abandonment. He highlighted the history that shaped their relationship, specifically mentioning that Victor had wanted Adam to be raised in Genoa City, but it was Hope’s decision to move to a farm in Kansas against Victor’s wishes. He noted that, regardless of legal arrangements, “in divorces, the children are the victims of it, period. This is a perfect example of it and that victimhood carries on and on and on.”
While Victor might be a bit controlling with his other children, Abby seems to be the exception. Braeden doesn’t quite have the answer to this question yet, saying it’s all in the hands of the writers. But on to the main part, we finally get to hear the exact reason for Victoria’s demotion. Braeden said that it all boils down to Victor’s innate suspicion of outsiders infiltrating his business empire. He believes Victoria may have been up to some behind-the-scenes maneuvering with Nate, and trust issues are never far from the surface. He said, “He’s very suspicious of anyone using love or marriage to his offspring as a means to get into the family business. He doesn’t like that.”

Eric deeply cares about what fans think of him
Just like he said, Victor always watches not just the people of Genoa city but also the fans. Braeden is looming around social media too, looking at what the fans are talking about. He said, “I read the fans’ remarks almost every day, so I know what’s going on [in the discourse of viewers] and I share their feelings. It’s interesting; my feelings and theirs are almost in synchronicity!”
Braeden has gone through quite a lot in the recent past, including battling bladder cancer. However, he’s faced it head-on, with a no-nonsense attitude. He opens up about why he decided to share his diagnosis, emphasizing the importance of preventive exams. “If I had not had a cystoscopy at a certain time, which really came about sort of accidentally, I would not have known that I had cancer and it would have, by now, reached who knows what stage. My eldest brother, who is eight years older than I am, had his bladder removed 10 years ago because he did not have the luxury of finding out that he had cancer before. So, I found it in the early stages,” Eric told Digest. He went on to note that, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
BLADDER CANCER, not prostate! Both are bad! But mine is in the early stages. So it’s manageable!
